This is probably the most debated subject at high school! I hear the term "Off and Away" more than any other phrase. Although I can't say I am against having cell phones allowed in class, I think that Dalton McGuinty is being naive. On my cell phone, there is no possible way for me to research information! My cell phone is definitely a social tool, not an educational one.
I admit, I do text in class. However I don't think at all that it hinders my learning. Sending the occasional text does not add or take away from the lesson at hand. When I text I do it at an appropriate time like when a teacher is handing out sheets, or we have time to work. It is not being disrespectful to text when the teacher isn't even talking!
As for using cell phones in class, I think it could be used as a way to enhance learning...in some cases. But what about the kids who don't have cell phones? It puts more pressure on those people who don't have cell phones to conform. I doubt those parents would be very pleased.
So: to allow cell phones? Or to ban them?
Here's what I think. Cell phones should not be banned. If students are using them at appropriate breaks in the lesson, its not causing anyone harm. It is only a problem when students over use them and never put them away.
